2014 Forest Race 1, Ballyboley Forest.

Tuesday evening saw the start of our annual forest race series. This year seen an increase in attendance with over 90 runners taking part in our first of 4 forest races.

On a perfect evening for running with no wind and sunny sky, the runners all set off. Early leader and ever improving NBH man Mark Mckinstry took to the front and held the lead until the finish, covering the stunningly beautiful but hilly coarse in 22mins 55sec. Mark was followed home by East Coast AC's James Brown in 2nd and fellow NBH man Martin Rea in 3rd.

There was a real battle going on for the first three lady's. Last years winner  Louise Lemon ( Orangegrove AC ) was the leading lady at the 3 mile stage but was being hotly pursued by Larne AC's Rhonda Brady. The larne lady had managed to close the gap and eventually overtook louise to finish in 30.00 mins, with louise 12 secs behind in 2nd place. Janice Plumb ( East Coast AC ) followed closely behind in 3rd place in 30.46 mins.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who took part for supporting the event and we hope to see you all at the next race in the series which takes place in Woodburn forest on Tue 27th May at 7:30pm.

Yet another impressive turnout of competitors, for the 3rd race in our forest race series. 97 runners took to the trails in the stunning setting of Tardree Forest on a warm summers evening. Stark contrast to the torrential rain from earlier in the day. This made for some slippery conditions underfoot towards the finish.

James Brown was the first male home, negotiating the hilly 3.3 mile course in a fantastic time of 19:08 mins. James led the field from the start but there was a closer race for 2nd & 3rd between 4 competitors. Only 12 secs separated all four, but eventually Matin Rea (NBH) came in 2nd 19:44 mins, Paul Horan (NBH) 3rd 19:49, James Wilson (Ballymena Runners) 4th 19:50 & Andy Guy ( East Coast AC) 5th 19:56.
In the Female category Jaquline McIlwrath (Ballymena Runners) 2nd 24:07 mins was leading in the first mile, but was caught early by eventual winner  Allyson O,Tool (East Coast AC) 1st 23:36 mins. Last years winner Louise Lemon (Orangegrove) did well to come in 3rd place 24:33 mins, as she had been competing in the tuff Mourne Mountains 1/2 Marathon at the weekend.

On Tuesday 24th June 2014, we hosted the final race of our annual Forest Trail Series, which is now celebrating it's 10th anniversary.  Record numbers have turned out for the Series thus far and despite wet conditions, a crowd of nearly one hundred hardy athletes descended on Woodburn Forest for Race 4, which covered an undulating 4.1m course.

We would like to thank all of the clubs and unattached athletes who attended and supported the series this year and we hope to see you all again in 2015.

The star of the Series so far, Mark McKinstry (North Belfast Harriers) made his intentions clear from the off, as he led earlier on.  Behind, Martin Rea (North Belfast Harriers), Nat Glenn (Unattached), James Trainor (DUB Runners), Andy Guy (East Coast AC) and Paul Horan (North Belfast Harriers) were all vying for the remaining podium spots.  In the ladies race, Maeve Lavery (DUB Runners), Allyson O'Toole (East Coast AC), Louise Lemon (Orangegrove AC) and Rhonda Brady (Larne AC) were all in contention early on.

In the end, it was the ever impressive Mark McKinstry who claimed top honours; the North Belfast Harriers man, ensured that he maintained his 100% record in the Series, as he made it three wins from his three appearances, after crossing the line in 22:43 (1st place); with this, mark sealed the overall (Male Open) Series victory.  James Trainor finished well to claim 2nd place in 23:42, before Martin Rea (23:48) just pipped Nat Glenn (4th place – 23:50) to 3rd place.

Maeve Lavery was the leading lady on the night, braking the tape in 27:29 (1st place).  East Coast AC's Allyson O'Toole, who finished on the podium in her two previous Series outings (Race 2 and Race 3) followed in 28:30 (2nd place); this ensured that Allyson was the overall Ladies Open title winner.  Louise Lemon showed that she is returning completed the ladies top three in 29:05 (3rd place).
